♫ Baby, it's a little less hot outside ♫

This may sound a bit mental but I only really feel like the Holidays are coming when those festive red and white Starbucks Christmas Cups appear.

I think this little cue means even more to me now that I live in the desert, where it will be a lovely 30° by noon today.

I've always LVED December.

I lve the anticipation and all the ribbon and wrapping paper and the twinkling lights and sparkly ornaments

I lve how it becomes completely legit and non-creepy to smile and wish perfect strangers "Happy Holidays" : )

The thing I don't like, however, is the way treats seem to take a serious dive after Thanksgiving.

Lovely as they are to look at, cookies with twice their weight in tooth-shatteringly sugary icing shellacked onto them are less goodie and more paperweight.

And fruitcake. Where do I begin with fruitcake?

They're actually quite beautiful, studded with pieces of those jewel-like, albeit slightly scary, green and red candied cherries but, that's the only nice thing I can say about what I've regarded for years as barely edible, rum soaked doorstops.

Then, while blog-hopping last week, I stumbled upon a very promising looking fruitcake recipe so thought I'd give it a whirl. Two words...

They turned out not-too-sweet, oh-so-moist and filled the house with that deep treacle-y, spicy smell of Christmas that'd turn even the staunchest of haters : )

  1. oohhh how exciting! love reading these at work! makes my day a little happier :)

im doing a basket of goodies for christmas this year as opposed to buying pressies for some :)

  2. Spreading the home-baked joy : ) Lucky friends!

The list of blogs I follow grows everyday, I think : P There's so much inspiration out there : )
