So, apparently, "damehood" is a word, who knew?
As cool as "being knighted" sounds, it couldn't possibly be how we'd phrase it when an accomplished lady is being recognised, right? Naturally, this called for a bit of googling.
Sadly, it's one of those instances where us girls get the shorter end of the stick.
"Dame" sounds a bit matronly, don't you think? But, when you say "sir", I think of monocles and fabulous mustaches which is so much more fun.
And, in a way, I'm very much at peace with the sad demise of these behemoth, hardcover, keepers of our vocabulary because it came at the perfect time.
Like everything else, our lexicon is ever evolving and I don't know if I could accept seeing "LOL" or "f-bomb" or "whatevs" in print.
Although, last year did bring some fun words as well, like "onesie" and "ethical hacker" and, my favourite addition of all, "group hug" : )
